IGN recently held a contest and 20 winners were selected to attend the Steam VR Developer Showcase along with winning a free Vive Pre. Here are the winning entries:
1) "Environment Composer" (working title) is a project I have been planning for a few weeks. It is a musical virtual reality experience. The experience starts with the user waking up on the farm being told by his virtual farmer father that his dreams of becoming a musical composer for an orchestra will never come true. The user begins his daily work on the farm, but his ability to create music begins. The farm animals all assemble for him in an orchestrated setup. Using each hand (controller), you are able to hover over the animals and highlight which should be singing/producing music. Cows would 'moo', sheep would 'bah', chickens would cackle. The combinations of the animals that the player chooses should change for a vast possibility of music. I am also dabbling with the idea having each touchpad be able to change the tempo and pitch of the bandimals (UP and Down on pad would change pitch, Left and Right would change tempo). To add difficulty and a "skill" component, I am figuring out a system that causes the user to go into a motion quicktime event (waving the controllers in a certain way) whenever they add a certain amount of animals (this is an idea that is definitely subject to change). If the user fails a certain amount of quicktime events, that user will turn around to see his father's crops being destroyed by a random disaster (locusts, fire, etc.). If the player completes his masterpiece, he or she will turn around to see a full crop.
The game only begins on the farm, however. I believe in experiences that give the community ways to create fantastic works. Giving the player animals would only limit the player. The game will feature two other areas besides the farm. These areas include an office building and a concert hall.
The office building will give the player a chance to use objects such as fax machines, coffee makers, and staplers to create music. If the player fails the quicktime events, he or she will be fired. If the player fulfills his 9 to 5 masterpiece, they will receive a promotion.
And finally, the concert hall is the final area to create music. I also expect this to be the gene pool for the greatest contributions from the community. The hall is the premier event where the player has an orchestra of robots operating the standard philharmonic experience. Based on the amount of quicktime events the player fails, his bow to the audience behind him will change. After the show, the player will automatically be asked to turn around. If he or she fails a lot, it will range from only one person in the audience, throwing a rotten tomato at them, to an entire audience cheering for you. Your farmer father was wrong about you. -Bradllez
2) The best game would be a game were you play God. You could go around and terraform a whole planet, while being able to interact with the world. It would be played in first person and you could watch the world evolve with organisms and people. -DuBoismax5
3) Relaxing 360 Photo Jigsaw Puzzles Take a deep breath in a minimally decorated space that's easy on the eyes and listen to the fire crackle as you look over a mound of giant jigsaw pieces. Request the online help of your mom and brother to sort pieces into groups of colors and begin clicking them together as you chat about your past week. As it begins to take shape, the three of you spin and marvel at the scale of the vision forming around you. Maybe these missing pieces will be the key to solving a riddle? Putting these together, could they form a door that can be opened to another world? Wow, this is a puzzle of us doing a puzzle at Grandma's house! Everyone air hugs in triumph -monkeymands
4) I'd love to see something that takes the concept of sensory deprivation and puts it to good use. I write a bit here and there but find myself distracted by things around me (TV, Smartphone, IGN.com, etc.) and would love to just be able to immerse myself into a world where there is nothing but myself and a typewriter at a desk. -Helmsbrother1
5) As Commander of a ship, you and you're crew are unfortunate to be sucked into a wormhole and spat out on the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Worst of all? Your energy supplies are running out with only a short few days before you run out of oxygen; resulting in the tragic deaths of you and your crew.
"Cathode", a beautiful RTS game I'm developing purely for VR in the Unreal Engine 4, requires your cunning intellect to command your limited crew on the surrounding foreign planets to recover enough energy core's to make it back home within 30 days. You must create a station and build out to claim the energy... but you are not alone. The beasts of these planets are unwelcoming to your kind, and the harsh elements will test your very might under pressure. Will you lead your crew home, or will you let the void claim another victim in the vacuum of space to parish?
In Cathode, you stand forefront overlooking your command table, directing your cadets into the dark depths of the planet below. Using the HTC Vive Controllers, you must control your team members on your holographic table from your ship above to collect resources, build a base, and expand outwards. Virtual Reality is the perfect playground for Cathode because you must interact directly and overlook the lay of the land from a 3D space; essentially like directing lemmings from a most painful death. Many creatures will try and destroy your base, and you must decide what's more important- gathering resources or defending your base.
You personally must oversee, and even control a personal robot to conduct specific repairs and constructions of your base below. While fellow cadets locate resources as well as defending surrounding areas you must take time to construct and solve puzzles which require quick technical skills to fix wires, replace faulty parts, or repair leaks. Using the hand tracking controls you must precisely and accurate do these tasks. You must be quick because each second you are down below, you leave your team vulnerable to attacks. Maybe you need to prioritize your energy to producing oxygen at the expense of lowering your defense? Take control down below and direct the energy from the power station to the support station. Need more gun? Gather enough resources to create an armory; the choice is up to you and you must make the executive decision. -sho0fly
6) The game would begin as you walk through a door into a big dining party, you would see NPC's around you naturally conversing over various topics when a waiter approaches you and asks if you are interested in something to drink. You politely shake your head and the waiter would then leave to continue to care for the other guests. You could then initiate conversations with the other guests and via a mass-effect dialogue system could begin to learn about the guests. Then after ten minutes or so there is a sudden explosion, leaving nothing but a dark screen. You then start again at the beginning of the experience entering that same door. The waiter once again asks if you are interested in a drink while a thousand things rush through your mind.
What happened?
Why am I back here?
Was that a bomb?
Which one of the guests set it off?
That's for you to find out. -oceanbeast
7) The perfect VR experience would start small. The wearer would wake up in a room and begin making it their own. They could pull items from the ether, expressing themselves with posters, trinkets, or their own works of art, created within the virtual world. When they are satisfied with this piece, they can open the one door in the room and enter the next room.
The next room will be larger, a makeshift living room, and a blank slate for a whole new tableau for the user to create. From here, he or she can create new rooms and branching points, all serving to further reflect who the player is as a person. One room may represent the brightest moment of their life, while another can be evocative of the depths of their deepest depression. Their greatest passions and interests can have their own rooms, or a room can be created for the player to simply play games or relax. The goal would be to create a house that accounts for the full breadth of the human soul, reaching out in all directions. And then the player would venture outside.
Outside, the player loses the power that they have previously wielded. The satisfaction of creation is instead replaced with the thrill of exploration, as a whole world of unknown structures and terrain lies out before them. Perhaps one player will leave their residential area and explore the "natural" world surrounding them, it in itself having been created by the world's developer and creator. Another might find themselves content in their surroundings, preferring to explore and understand their immediate environment with an intimacy that the more worldly players may never know.
In any case, all users will be occupying the same nexus. Once outside our homes, we will be seeing and interacting with kindred spirits, strangers who share our same drives for self-expression, exploration, and community. We can keep to ourselves, or approach others to form real bonds. But furthermore, we can enter the homes of strangers and get a glimpse into the souls of others. Their hopes, their dreams, their fears, their passions, all perceivable and maneuverable in a virtual environment.
The perfect VR experience would be all-encapsulating, attempting to recreate and satisfy the very things that drive us in real life: knowledge, happiness, expression, and perhaps most importantly, empathy. Players would be able to experience the very elements that define the human experience, reawakening to the realization that it's all out there, in the real world, for us to experience every day of our lives. -vidkid888
8) Gaming is what we love the most and we are all excited to experience a new gadget that will make gaming a more immersive activity and make it better. I will love to see multiple franchises in the VR world like: star wars or a superman game. In my case I'm a medical doctor and i'm thrilled to start using VR for surgical training and start developing software with it for medical training. instead of practicing on living patients, VR will make a doctor more comfortable on treating patient on our early years and maybe become more familiar with the human body or certain pathologies that sometimes we don't see that often (depending where did you trained and where are you practicing) and with the invention of VR when we do see certain pathologies it can help us diagnose faster. Again VR is a tool that will improve our daily life in so many ways, but in my case I see it as a way to bring health to remote areas, teaching and training for future generation of doctors. -PurpleRicketz
9) My ultimate experience would be a social golf simulation game where me and a few buddies (either from across the globe or locally) can get together and play beautiful courses that we will never get to play or experience. I want to be able to swing the hand controllers just like a real golf club and have a real simulated ball flight and physics.
Being able to get into a golf cart or one of those new surfboard-looking golf scooters and driving across the course to get your ball and take your next shot would be awesome! You could even kneel down and read the greens! How cool would that be?!? No more moving lines that show the break of the green, just your eyes. Even walking over to your golf bag and selecting a club straight out of the bag would be really cool. I can see myself lifting my hand up to my face and using a virtual range finder.
Making the clubhouse at any course a social hub before tee time or just for relaxing and telling others of your great VR golf feats would be great for finding new friends for quick rounds or maybe even for finding teams/partners for big club events.
Golf is such a fun and great sport socially, it only makes sense to bring it to virtual reality. I have had some of my best moments on the golf course with family members, friends, and even co-workers! I have always wanted to make video games myself, but never had time to try and teach myself. If I was gifted with game design, I would be working day and night to make this experience come to life.
My dad is the head coach of a college golf team and he is currently turning a building on the campus into a huge indoor golf practice area. It's going to have multiple golf simulators (the ones where you hit into a big screen and it tracks your club and ball info and displays it onto the virtual practice range). I feel like a VR golf experience would be perfect for something like this and for all the bedroom athletes out there. -bscottyt
10) I think a hunting simulator, or a game with great stealth segments would be perfect for VR.
A boxing game also makes perfect sense. You have to physically react not to get punched in the face. Could take it a whole new level. -PalookaBrandt
11) (14 entries not sure which one was chosen) -Paste_Eater
12) Recently, Escape from a Room experiences have become very popular attractions for players all around the world. The concept involves using observation and problem solving skills to complete puzzles and interpret clues within a time limit, in order to escape the environment.
The room scale tracking volume afforded by the Vive seems a perfect fit for such experiences. Level design could transfer to an extent from current real world layouts, and alternate configurations can reasonably allow for small, medium, and large room sizes based on a user's available space. Thanks to the virtual medium, there is also an opportunity for more creative environments; players could find themselves needing to disarm a bomb, or repair the airlock aboard a space station. Players may have to complete a task while holding off waves of zombies and barricading doors and windows, somewhat similar to the finales in Left 4 Dead. Online multiplayer would also allow for specific environments in which 2 or 3 players are needed to accomplish a task. -SemipermeableMembran
13) A live sporting event like an NFL, MLB, NBA game, or UFC event. Being able to switch to which camera you want on the fly. The view from a sideline or ring side seat. A view from the cheap seats for the next round/quarteinning. Or maybe even a ref cam. -A_Boome
14) I say someone should bring back a Steel Battalion-style mecha sim title. With the two controllers and a bunch of buttons, the Vive could be the perfect set of hardware for recreating a mech cockpit.
also i just really miss steel battalion
why did the kinect one have to exist -dreadnaught002
15) I'd dig a Running Man style action-stealth horror game show in VR. I can just imagine myself skulking around hiding in this rubble-filled city and having the crazy combatants come after you. It could have all the funny 80's tropes and comedy and have the game show be hosted by Steve Harvey!....or maybe Richard Karn if you're worried about host accuracy. -halo_monger
16) I think something like The Revenant would be awesome where you start out after the bear attack and have to survive and get your revenge. Sort of a Far Cry type game with an all winter setting with the best possible graphics, but no lame QTE's because you can use your motion controllers to do detailed things like gather supplies and start fires. -ThePsycold
17) Being able to travel (even if only virtually) to historic events in our world's history and to witness them as if you are truly there would be incredible.
I mean, Doctor Who goes and does the same thing, but since we can't travel in time like he can, recreating some of these events would be a good alternative. -RealFrowns
18) I would say a dark, crazy, fun-house style mini golf course game with wonky physics. -Alphabetized
19) I think an awesome VR game would be a horror game like amnesia! -SeattleVRFan
20) VR is perfect for racing sims. A great Accuforce wheel, solid pedals with a fluid pressure brake pedal, a sequential shifter, and H-Pattern shifter. All that on a 360 degree moving rig so we can feel some of the forces of a race car. -kevman_101
What do you guys think? It was very awesome of IGN to have this contest. Congratulations to all the winners. I know a good chunk of this community participated in this contest so I decided to compile this list for you guys. Winning results source: http://people.ign.com/kyleoconnor-ign
