Top 10 G1 Climax matches of the (last) decade

With the G1 fever coming up soon, I thought it would be interesting to reflect on the best matches from the tournaments of yesteryear. So here comes my top 10 of the last decade. From a rating perspective, I have 15 to 13, 12 to 5 and 4 to 1 in the same tiers so I consider them interchangeable.
Honourable mentions:
Tetsuya Naito vs. Shingo Takagi [ Match ] (G1 Climax 29 Day 14, B block, 04.08.2019) Fifteen years in the making and it was worth the wait. Naito's brand of selling does wonders against elite workers, of which Shingo is part. The new heavyweight with the best looking offense in the game and his relentless pressuring style against the people's champ who is a bumping machine. A can't miss affair.
Tomoaki Honma vs. Katsuyori Shibata [ Match ] (G1 Climax 24 Day 8, B block, 03.08.2014) Peak Honmania. How the Osaka crowd tries to will him to his first G1 victory against serial bully Shibata is unbelievable. A sub 11-minute war doesn't get any better. Raw. Organic. Visceral.
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada [ Match ] (G1 Climax 23 Day 8, A block, 10.08.2013) In the middle of the greatest three match stretch of any pairing I have ever seen lies the best draw of the decade, overshadowed by two GOAT contenders at both edges. A sensational display of everything I love in wrestling: clean work, compelling story progression, selling. Meaningful from bell to bell with the right setting at the end, unlike some of the more acclaimed draws thereafter.
Tetsuya Naito vs. Kota Ibushi [ Match ] (G1 Climax 27 Day 1, A block, 17.07.2017) The G1 27, arguably the best ever, begins (and concludes) with a bang: the overwhelming favourite against a returning crowd's favourite. Second rope piledriver for a near fall, that's all you need to know to picture the unsettling, dangerous structure. After the pissing contest, the neck contest.
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kota Ibushi [ Match ] (G1 Climax 23 day 4, B block, 04.08.2013) The famous main event of a show of the decade contender. One of, if not the first appearance of Murder Kota. It is also my favourite occurrence because it propels an already stellar match and event to legendary status. The craziest part? The sequel a year and a half later is even better.

Without further ado, let's go for the top 10. Buckle up!
-10- Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tomohiro Ishii [ Match ] (G1 Climax 23 day 2, A block, 02.08.2013) The best big match performer of 2013 against the soon to be back-to-back wrestler of the year in my book. Back when marquee main events can clock under 20 minutes, those two don’t waste any time to cook a simple, kind of obvious, yet so effective story. The crowd is against the Ace? No problem, he reverts to his mid-00s heel habits in response. Thus, he takes his opponent lightly. He works a stiffer style and at a faster pace. Dismissive attitude, shoot headbutt, you name it. Because of his casual approach, he moves away from his formula. He wrestles in the wrong way from a kayfabe standpoint and it opens the door to Ishii’s coming out party. How brilliant?! Fire, selling, monster near fall thanks to a plain cradle, Ishii driller, the total package on the way to the major upset. With Korakuen trending anti Tana at that time and being Ishii City, there you have your special treat. Top guys getting their ass handed to them by the small underdog is always glorious and the tradition starts here. Stone Pitbull’s signature match... for 48 hours. One of the three cornerstones put over huge by Tana in 2013, alongside future Ace Okada and future 1b guy Naito.
-09- Tomohiro Ishii vs. Kenny Omega [ Match ] (G1 Climax 28 day 14, A block, 04.08.2018) Two of the three monsters from the best block ever collide in a memorable clash. The unbeaten vs. the Big Four killer. The noisy Gaijin vs. NJPW's perennial unsung MVP. The diva vs. the workhorse. The champion who skips tours vs. the uncrowned king who never takes a day off. The guy we gave everything to, who didn't pay his dues, dropped the ball more often than not during his initial push and was shoehorned into a prominent role vs. the guy who worked hard for years to slowly climb up the card and who never disappoints every time he gets an opportunity. The self-proclaimed best bout machine vs. the true best bout machine. The top guy with annoying mannerisms vs. the no non-sense embodiment. The goofy, cartoonish, over the top, wanna be cool heel vs. the one who carries himself like the toughest dude around and the baddest motherf*cker in the world. The guy who constantly breaks the fourth wall vs. the living gimmick. The contrasted background adds so much beyond kayfabe. Looking back, with all we know now, I take guilty pleasure in seeing Ishii leaving Kenny bleeding after a formidable display of beautiful violence. The fact that loyalty and team spirit triumphs over self-promotion is even more fulfilling retroactively.
-08- Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito [ Match ] (G1 Climax 27 Day 17, A block, 11.08.2017) The one where the cheers for Tana get drowned out by the chants for Naito. That alone puts this in rare air. Then there is the phenomenal in-ring. The flat ending of the Dominion encounter pays huge dividends as we get an unbreathable Texas Clover sequence during which Tana almost sits on Naito’s head. The work, the story, the atmosphere... We approach perfect storm territory. Ryogoku + NJPW = certified banger. Unreal match between those two; my favourite of their trilogy. The magnum opus of the feud of 2017 according to me.
-07- Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kazuchika Okada [ Match ] (G1 Climax 25 day 18, B block, 15.08.2015) The famed "tap out" match. With the Final getting its own show since 2014 and the block action split for the first time, the G1 25 inaugurates the big time block's finals and boy does it deliver. After a lacklustre tournament, the Chaos stable mates redeem themselves with what I value as the best match in a week-end full of greatness; they easily surpass their critically acclaimed output from the year prior. To me, all-timers establish the finish during the first five minutes or lay the foundations leading to it. This one certainly does it and then some. During the feeling out process in the early goings, Nakamura toys with Okada on the mat and it will come back to bite the rising Ace in the ass. What is usually a filler customary exchange turns into an integral part of the storytelling, making the whole package ultra cohesive by foreshadowing the inevitable endgame. The King of Strong Style is arguably the best big match performer of his time and after Wrestle Kingdom 9, here is another ultimate display to that claim. The feeling of real struggle conveyed by his incredible body language and sense of urgency elevates things in a unique way. Okada is no slouch either as he more than holds his own through his spectacular facials. Also, finally, Nakamura's legit injured arm plays a role and Okada's nasty neck work is back. A somewhat forgotten gem.
-06- Minoru Suzuki vs. AJ Styles [ Match ] (G1 Climax 24 Day 7, B block, 01.08.2014) How stellar and constantly overwhelming NJPW has become since mid-2016? To the point where the 2014 MOTY now feels like an afterthought. But it shouldn’t. As soon as Suzuki comes out with his game face on, you know something special is about to unfold. The intensity in his look is magnificent. Is there anyone better to convey such strong feelings through facials only?! And it is not like the aftermath wasn’t remarkable too: the hostile Korakuen chanting AJ’s name at the end of this classic is always chill-inducing. Very uncharacteristic for a New Japan crowd and definitely a highlight of AJ’s tenure. There is a before and an after this moment for him; this is the day he arrives in Japan. When you talk about greatness coming out of nowhere, here is the prime example. No build, no story, just two supremely gifted wrestlers creating magic almost from scratch.
-05- Kazuchika Okada vs. Tomohiro Ishii [ Match ] (G1 Climax 26 Day 13, A block, 06.08.2016) How great is it when Okada is taken out of his comfort zone? Probably my favourite match ever. The overall flow is pure perfection. Everything is so smooth. More importantly, everything matters. For real. Not hyperbolically but literally. I can run through each and every move, each and every sequence and explain how it paints the big picture. Attention to detail at its paroxysm. The pace, the rhythm and the crowd’s response are a thing of beauty. When you get deep two counts seconds in (devastating lariat then sliding lariat) and feet stomping midway through (superplex from the third rope), it speaks volume. Among the many other iconic moments packed in such a short amount of time, THE moment: chop to the throat during the Rainmaker pose zoom out. Had the stakes been higher or the structure very unique, it would definitely have cracked my top 3. What I like the most is when the commentator says "Mada kubi o hanasanai" (meaning I guess "He isn't finished with his neck" or "He won't let go the neck") right after the sitting tombstone during the scintillating closing stretch. I love the way he says the sentence. At that very moment (we reach the climax), it adds so much to the viewing experience. Even if I roughly understand 10 to 15 % of what they say, Japanese commentators are the best at getting across emotions. Add the constant "Suge" and "Chance" by Liger, his ecstatic look after the bell and the standing ovation from the crowd and you have something really special. To this day, it still baffles me that the outcome doesn't lead to bigger things: at least an angle about power struggles within Chaos, at best a title shot. The annual Osaka special from Ishii, who has yet another classic there.
-04- Kenny Omega vs. Tetsuya Naito [ Match ] (G1 Climax 27 Final, 13.08.2017) How out of this world is NJPW in 2017? The best G1 final to date, the part II of a pairing rivalling a GOAT contender of a part I, is barely the third best match of the year. The fitting example of how a botch (two in that case) can add to the atmosphere and strengthen the storytelling. The quintessential spot fest mixed with psychology. Also, how about the big time reaction for the Shuyaku speech and the deafening roll call?!
-03- Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kota Ibushi [ VTR | Match ] (G1 Climax 28 Final, 12.08.2018) They can do whatever they want with Okada, Tana will always remain my Ace. Okada puts on classics in his prime; Tana does so in the twilight of his career. At 40+ years old, a few months after Okada earns his record breaking V12 to his detriment, he completes one of the most engaging and emotional redemption arcs in maybe his finest performance. My favourite G1 Final ever? My MOTY? Double check. The sequence during which he moves forward through Ibushi's slaps is one for the ages. There was a time when I cheered against him because "Tanawinslol". In 2018, I cheered for him because he reaching the top one last time was so captivating, enthralling. Another interesting aspect is how the structure and Tana’s strategic acumen work at a meta level. As he usually does in big matches, he goes after the leg. As is usually the case, his opponent no sells. From that point on, the wrestler and the man change their plan and work an Ibushi match: less subtle, flashier, with a huge emphasis on the story still. And it might be a stretch but the leg work still comes into play somehow because at the end, Ibushi can’t counter and can’t move out of the way during the HFF.
-02- Tetsuya Naito vs. Kenny Omega [ Match ] (G1 Climax 26 Day 18, B block, 13.08.2016) The leg match of the decade in NJPW, if not in all of wrestling. Following the great exodus, the revamp of the Big Four induces a shift in philosophy at the top of the card: the grounded, realistic, kind of old school type of product becomes more highspotty, therefore with an amplified sense of danger. There is no better incarnation of that than the much anticipated bout between the folks in charge of the cultural change. One MOTY, two performers established as major players moving forward. In my mind, this is when the seeds for the strongest year in NJPW history (2017) are planted. The main event of Dominion 2012 (Tana vs. Okada II) brings us the epic formula specific to the Bushiroad era, this block’s final upgrades it to the 2.0 version in which the workrate now meets superior athleticism responsible for thrilling, crazy spots, without throwing the psychology out of the window. Layer after layer, the match builds and keeps on escalating until it reaches a madness from which it never returns.
-01- Tomohiro Ishii vs. Katsuyori Shibata [ Match ] (G1 Climax 23 Day 4, A block, 04.08.2013) Could it be otherwise? The G1 is all about sprint style epics since the beginning; Ishii is Mister G1 since 2013 so I couldn't think of a better number one. Alongside Nakamura vs. Ibushi at Wrestle Kingdom 9, one of the two most famous gateways to NJPW in the West. To me, a five star match is a match I can make an argument for as the greatest of all-time. I certainly can for this one. An overlooked part is the dynamic upstream. On the one hand, there is Shibata, one of the former chosen ones. Since his return to NJPW a year earlier, he brings this rare aura of bullying invader. As a result, most of his appearances have a special feeling to them. On the other hand, there is Ishii, a talented although overlooked aging lad who has been fighting forever in NJPW to get recognition, a guy who finally gets a chance in 2013, the year he comes to age. Banger after banger, even if he doesn’t win yet, he shows that he clearly isn’t here to get pushed around, as demonstrated against the well-known bullies Tanaka and Suzuki. Throughout 2013, the paradigm changes for him: he goes from underdog crowd favourite who always falls short to powerhouse who can get the job done, as shown by his first upset win against Kojima in the New Japan Cup, and then especially earlier in the G1 against the Ace in his crowning achievement... for two days. So now, entering this match, Ishii is the people’s hero, the insider who stands up for the company against the enemy from outside, the traitor who left when things went south a few years ago and came back once the resurgence started. Shibata has to atone for his sins and Ishii, with the crowd’s approval, confronts him to make him pay. Despite the short length, the storytelling is amazing. The story is simple: a battle of manliness to determine the toughest dude around. But the progression through it is flawless: from jumping to each other’s throat to overwhelm the opponent, to the duel to determine who can take the most punishment, to the mind games when they steal each other's stuff, to eventually the duel to determine who can dish out the most punishment. Once the match reaches the last act, they use absolutely everything: wrestling moves, strikes stiff as hell, submissions (and not the panic figure four Shibata used to going to early in most of his matches at that time but nasty submissions to break Ishii in half). They go from I want to crush you, to I want to show you I am the better man, to I went too far to back down so now I just want to win in order to stop this infamy. And at the end, it is all about surviving thanks to a little crack in the armour, a point driven home by the exquisite three count. Shibata is neither beaten nor defeated, he simply loses the match. Ishii’s brainbuster, a finisher not protected yet, creates enough damages to barely allow a three count, following which Shibata kicks out a split second too late. He isn’t KO, he just ran out of time. This is how you use subtlety to protect someone: Ishii wins the wrestling match but the question about who is the alpha male, the entire point about the whole affair, remains. Among those small unnoticed bit, there is also the effective double down. Not your mandatory and inconsequential rest sequence because two weeks before, a marquee Goto / Shibata match at the Kizuna Road event ends in a double KO. When is the last time in NJPW (or anywhere else) you heard about an undercard / before intermission / midcard match stealing the show? It never happens because cards are built for the main event to shine. So, without being the focal point of the entire company, on arguably a top 5 show of the decade headlined by another all-timer, Ishii and Shibata deliver a GOAT contender in the fifth slot on a ten match card. Let that sink in. Think of all the bouts you consider historically great and five star worthy: how many came lower than third from the top, without intensive build, the hype of a video package, particular emotional hook...? No tropes, no smoke and mirrors, no BS, just two wrestler’s wrestlers at the top of their game, almost out of nowhere, with the perfect setting, in front of the perfect crowd, with the perfect work. The in-ring, the story, the raucous atmosphere… A once in a lifetime situation. The perfect storm! Could a sprint get any better? Probably the best sub 15-minute war of all-time. Arguably the greatest G1 match ever, if not the greatest period.
